Other things to consider when looking for work in Portugal

Employment Law

Employees in Portugal will normally work eight hours a day, 40 hours a week. Full-time employees are entitled to 22 days of annual leave, as well as the nine mandatory holidays.

Employment contracts in Portugal are like many European countries, with permanent, fixed-term, part-time and intermittent employment contracts being the most common employment methods.

Work visas and residence permits

If you are a citizen of the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, you will not need an official permit to work in Portugal.

However, you will be required to apply for a green card within six months once you have found a job.

If you are not an EU citizen, the process is a bit longer.

For seasonal workers or those on short-term contracts, you can apply for a temporary stay visa, which is generally valid for up to three months or the duration of the employment contract.

For long-term employment, you will first need to apply for a Portuguese residence permit, which will allow you to stay in Portugal for up to four months while applying for a one-year temporary residence permit. This permit can then be extended with renewals of employment contracts.

Portuguese companies are obliged by law to offer jobs first to EU or EEA citizens. Therefore, work visas can be difficult for non-EU citizens to obtain unless you possess specialized skills.

Salaries in Portugal

Portugal is set annually at around € 665 per month (as of 2021).

Full-time employees are also entitled to an annual Christmas bonus in December, equivalent to a month's pay, and a vacation bonus once a year.

Yes, you must also pay taxes and social security contributions. This comes from your salary and the amount depends on how much you earn.

If you get a full-time or part-time job with a Portuguese company, these contributions will automatically be deducted from your monthly salary.
